Ten things to do in March and April

  1. Cut back shrubs that have been left for winter colour; i.e. Dogwoods (Cornus) and Willow (Salix)
  2. Protect vulnerable plants from late frosts with fleece.
  3. Treat moss, lichen, algae etc. on hard surfaces.
  4. Protect new spring shoots from slugs.
  5. Lift and divide perennials that have become too large.
  6. Hoe early weeds to keep them under control, as it’s too early for herbicides to work.
  7. Plant summer flowering bulbs.
  8. Plant early potatoes, onion sets, shallots.
  9. Prune climbing roses and bush roses.
  10. Make sure your mowers ready for the first cut.
